Things that piss me off about Mass Effect 2 for PC

  1. New weapons seem entirely pointless.  There are no numbers so how can I even know if one is better than another?  I changed to a single shot pistol because the burst seemed inaccurate, but I never bothered changing any of my companions’ guns, because there was no way to know if it even did anything.
  2. Stores will sell you upgrades you already have.  Money is just gone.
  3. Company intros are unskippable… really?
  4. The entire start sequence, and most every cutscene in the game is unskippable.  Is this Japan now?  What the hell?  I go into the game the first time and my settings are completely hozed.  Some odd resolution my monitor is having problems with.  My center channel audio is gone so I can’t even hear what is going on.  But I can’t get to an options menu to change it.  Nor can I skip ahead to just fix the settings and restart.  I have to sit through the entire thing.  It not only wasted my time it also completely ruined the moment.
  5. The Cerberus network login NEVER WORKS.  I’ve never once seen it work on startup.  NEVER.  It always fails.  No big deal right, just try again?  Wrong, it doesn’t save your information.  You have to type it all in again.  Ok so I’ll just type my userid… tap tap tap, tab to get to the next field… oh wait tab doesn’t work because some console guy wrote this code.  Ok let me reach over and grab my mouse and click on the god damned password field.  Ok type in password tap tap tap ENTER.  Nothing… you have to click on login.  Enter doesn’t work… really?  And I have to do this every time I start the game.  Thanks.
  6. The lighting in the character creation screen has absolutely nothing to do with the lighting anywhere else in the game ever.  Get that skin tone perfect?  When you get out into the real world you’ll be either white as a sheet, an unhealthy shade of grey, a jaundiced yellow, or a ganguro tanned idiot.  Also you can’t see a profile so you won’t realize that your cheekbones stick out about 400 miles.  Want to change it?  Get ready to restart and spend another 20 goddamn minutes in an unskippable cutscene.
  7. Mousewheel doesn’t work in the codex screen.
  8. In the first part of the game (which you’ll see several times) the codex stays lit even after you’ve read everything.
  9. Double click should perform actions in menus.  Develop for PC first people.
  10.   If there is one fundamental axiom of game development that any designer should learn, it is that losing control of your character is not fun.  This is something that mmo designers really love to torture you with.  Anyone that lived through early dark age of camelot got used to standing around stunned or mesmerized for half the time they played.  It sucked then and it sucks now.  Any “big damage” event in mass effect 2 gives you a “omg I’m stunned!” animation.  That’s fine, I can handle that.  But then you make me immune to that effect for a short period of time.  Even dark age of camelot figured that one out.  If you don’t you get the scenarios that happen in mass effect 2, which were THE ONLY TIME I EVER EVEN CAME CLOSE TO DYING.  Lets face it, the game is easy.  The only hard part would be aiming, which if you have a mouse, is about as hard as sitting in a chair.  On a console with a console controller, this is probably the primary challenge of combat.  However, if your character gets hit by a rocket, and you sit there with your thumb in your ass watching her dance around “omg I’m on fire!”  “omg I’m stunned” only to get hit by another rocket and restart the same animation over and over and over until you die.  Well that’s wonderful.  You are dead and you never had a chance.  Guess what?  That is not fun.  And more than that I’m astonished that the game shipped with that in it.
  11.   There are a few spots with invalid collision data, and the game warps you up into the ceiling.  If you are manually adjusting positions to try to fudge collisions, you are doing it wrong.  Don’t use arbitrary geometry for collision data.
  12.   Some missions end abruptly with no way to go explore the rest of the map.  Some simply close a door you went through and won’t let you back through.  Both are infuriating.  On some of the missions, you got it right with the “press F to finish” thing.  That’s the way they should all be!  Let me make sure I’ve explored everything.  Either that or clearly label something that is going to slam shut so I can avoid that spot until I’ve explored.
  13.   Thanks for sending me an email spoiling a companion I haven’t seen yet.
  14.   Codex entry on Aeia is an old version and doesn’t fit with the changes to the story.
  15.   Codex entry for Turian government is messed up at the end, repeated lines.
  16.   Hitting space should not pick conversation options!  Space is for skipping things.  Often you try to skip and instead pick a conversation choice you never even saw.  Look at the old republic’s code if you want to get this right.
  17.   Load times are really really bad.  I can’t imagine what you could possibly be doing that would take that long.  Are the assets being built as you load them?  Compiling shaders on the fly?
